At least 2 dead, 13 injured as high speed train hits truck near Ostrava

At least 2 people are dead and 13 other are injured after express passenger train hits a tractor-trailer at railroad crossing near Studenka, a town in Ostrava district Wednesday morning.

According to the police, Polish driver of the tractor-trailer ignored a railroad crossing’s warning sound and light system and attempted to cross railroad tracks ahead of a train. His effort failed, when the barriers came down, trapping him and his vehicle in the middle of the crossing.

Two passengers on the train died on the scene, 13 were transported to the hospital, and five remain in critical condition. Railroad engineer reportedly lost most of his both legs in the accident.

Incident occurred Wednesday morning shortly before 7:45. According to Milan Chovanec, who is Minister of the Interior, the driver has already been arrested, and charges are pending.

The total damages were pre-estimated at over 88 million Czech Crowns (USD 3,55 million).
