The European Union (EU) has demonstrated unwavering support for the Belarusian people, especially following the falsification of the 2020 presidential elections and the government’s crackdown on civilians. In response to Belarus’ involvement in the Russian military aggression, the EU has shifted its assistance away from the authorities, imposed restrictive measures against the Lukashenka regime, and increased support for Belarusian citizens and civil society.
The EU has imposed sanctions against the Lukashenka regime due to the continued suppression of human rights, the instrumentalization of migrants, and support for the Russian military invasion against Ukraine. These sanctions aim to hold those responsible for repression and unjustified aggression accountable.
A comprehensive plan of economic support worth €3 billion has been outlined for a future democratic Belarus. This investment program aims to stabilize the Belarusian economy, unlock growth potential, and create jobs, signaling the EU’s long-term commitment to Belarus’ sovereignty and prosperity.
The EU continues to support victims of repression in Belarus and abroad, including financial assistance and other forms of support. It also supports businesses in exile, providing financial and technical assistance to small companies that have relocated abroad.
Education initiatives include scholarship and professional exchange programs, allowing students and professionals affected by the political crisis to study abroad or online. The EU is the lead donor supporting Belarusian civil society representatives both within the country and in exile.
The EU’s united response to ongoing repression against the Belarusian people can be summarized by three S’s: Support, Solidarity, and Sanctions. The EU supports the right of the Belarusian people to choose their own future and continues to speak with one loud voice in support of their democratic aspirations.
