In a significant weather event, the Czech Republic has been grappling with the challenges posed by heavy snowfall, particularly affecting the Karlovarský, Liberecký, Královéhradecký, and Pardubický regions. The snow, described as wet and heavy, has led to widespread power outages and transportation disruptions.

Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Transport and Power in the Czech Republic

Public Transport and Roadways Severely Impacted

The snowfall has severely impacted public transportation in the Středočeský region and parts of Prague. Issues such as icing on trolley lines and snow-covered switches have caused significant delays in train and bus services. The Prague Integrated Transport (PID) reported numerous road closures due to the snow calamity. Trains and buses across various lines are experiencing substantial delays, with some services being completely canceled.

In Prague, several tram and city bus lines are operating with delays or diversions, exacerbated by heavy snowfall and intense traffic. The situation is similar across the Středočeský region, with numerous bus services being canceled, shortened, or delayed, and several buses getting stuck on snow-covered roads.

Warnings and Weather Conditions

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute had issued a warning, predicting over seven centimeters of new snow. The warning remains in effect in northern Moravia, Silesia, and the Králicko area, with the potential for snowdrifts and blizzards, especially in the afternoon and evening. Snowdrifts have already been reported on major routes like the D6 highway and the I/6 road in the Karlovarský region towards Prague.

Emergency Services and Accidents

Emergency services have been responding to over a hundred weather-related incidents, primarily involving fallen trees on roads and railway tracks. The Karlovarský region, in particular, faced significant railway disruptions due to fallen trees and branches. However, by the afternoon, all tracks were reported to be clear.

There have been accidents as well, including a tree falling on a car near Oloví, and another incident in Habartov, fortunately without any injuries. In the Plzeň region, a gritter truck overturned on the I/22 road near Soustov, with no injuries reported.

Traffic and Road Safety

Despite the challenging conditions, there hasn’t been a significant increase in traffic accidents. However, authorities are urging drivers to be cautious, adjust their driving style and speed according to the weather conditions and road status.

Regional Impacts and Road Closures

In the Ústecký region, regional buses in the Chomutov area experienced delays. Several roads were rendered impassable due to snow and ice, particularly in the Krušné mountains and the Litoměřice area. Road maintenance teams are working to clear and grit the roads in preparation for potential ice formation.

In the Liberecký region, trucks were stuck on the I/13 road near Kamenický Šenov and the II/292 road near Záhoří. The situation was compounded by fallen trees, hindering road maintenance efforts. Similar issues were reported on railways in the region, though the main line between Semily and Železný Brod was cleared.

In the Královéhradecký region, several traffic accidents were reported, including truck accidents in Náchod and Babí, and a car sliding into a creek in Stará Paka. Roads in the Krkonoše mountains had a layer of compacted and partially icy snow.

Emergency services also responded to accidents in the Olomoucký region, including a truck accident near Černá Voda and a bus accident near Kozlov.

In the Moravskoslezský region, the I/56 road between Ostravice and Bílá was closed to trucks due to snowy conditions and the need to protect water sources from salting. Trucks are being diverted through alternative routes.

This weather event highlights the challenges posed by heavy snowfall in the Czech Republic, affecting transportation, power supply, and emergency services. The situation is being closely monitored, with efforts underway to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
