Czech President Petr Pavel has called for Europe to lessen its dependence on the United States for defense and instead focus on strengthening the European pillar of NATO. Speaking at the College of Europe in Bruges, Pavel emphasized the need for Europe to fulfill its defense obligations and not solely rely on NATO’s security provisions. He suggested that European nations should consider increasing their defense spending beyond the 2 percent of GDP target, a view that aligns with the consensus reached at the NATO Vilnius summit in July.

Pavel, a former general and senior NATO leader, also advocated for NATO’s enlargement, urging that it should not be delayed until candidate countries perfectly align with the alliance. He highlighted the importance of countering Russia’s narrative in Africa. His presidency, which began in early 2023, has been marked by a focus on defense and security issues.

In a related development, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg held discussions with G7 leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, Poland, and Romania, addressing concerns over the U.S. Congress’ decision to freeze aid funding for Ukraine. Stoltenberg stressed the necessity of continued support for Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace.
