Two Officers Shot Just Before Shooter Commits Suicide

Two Police Officers were shot Monday morning by a mentally ill, 34-year-old man who later turned the weapon, which belonged to one of the policemen, on himself.

Both officers are being treated in the Domazlice hospital. According to the Police statement on Twitter, they are in non-life threatening condition.

The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The shooting occurred at a reception center run by Roman Catholic Diocese Charity of Plzen in a town of Domazlice, a municipality of approximately 40 000 in the Plzen Region.

The police were dispatched to the reception center to assist the Medical Rescue Service with a man suffering from Schizophrenia who was refusing to be transported to the hospital due to his worsening condition.

During the police intervention, the man allegedly got hold of a firearm belonging to one of the officers and shot multiple rounds wounding both policemen. Then he turned the gun on himself.

Lubomír Metnar, Minister of the Interior, commented the incident saying that the Czech Police needs to analyze the situation and take appropriate measures to avoid such events happening again in the future.

Criminal Police and Investigation Service is leading the investigation.

The case is now also under review by the General Inspection of Security Forces. The agency confirmed that only one weapon belonging to one of the Police officers was involved in the shooting. But it refused to make any further comments at this moment.
