“Overwhelming majority” of EU members supports talks on Ukraine’s accession – Prime Minister of Czechia – Yahoo News

Petr Fiala, the Prime Minister of Czechia, announced that a significant majority of European Union leaders are in favor of initiating negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This statement came after an informal meeting of EU leaders on October 6th. Fiala’s comments were made in response to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s expressed doubts about Ukraine’s EU membership.

Fiala emphasized the importance of starting accession talks with Ukraine, a country that has been under attack by Russia. He stated that this viewpoint was supported by the “overwhelming majority of speakers” at the summit. “I am convinced that this is an absolutely prevailing position among the leaders,” Fiala said.

Additionally, Fiala advocated for accelerating the EU enlargement process. He stressed the need for decisive action and a clearer roadmap for countries that have been seeking EU membership for a long time, specifically mentioning the Western Balkans.

According to media reports, EU leaders are preparing to politically endorse what is expected to be a positive decision by the European Commission on Ukraine’s readiness to start accession talks in December. European Council President Charles Michel expressed his desire for the EU to be ready for enlargement by 2030. However, some EU members are hesitant to commit to specific dates for the accession of new members.
