In just the last week, 449 new cases of whooping cough were reported, pushing the total number for the early months of 2024 far beyond the cumulative total of the previous four years. This surge is the most significant in two decades, with the exception of 2014, which saw over 2,500 cases. The current outbreak predominantly affects young people aged 15 to 19, who account for nearly a third of all cases, although individuals from birth to 96 years old have been diagnosed, with a median age of 35.
The Youngest at Risk
Alarmingly, the disease has not spared the youngest and most vulnerable, with 36 cases reported among children under one year of age in 2024 alone. This is particularly concerning given the availability of vaccination against pertussis (whooping cough) in the Czech Republic since 1958, which is part of the mandatory childhood vaccination schedule.
Regional Hotspots and Vaccination Challenges
The outbreak has hit hardest in the South Bohemian, Central Bohemian, and Vysočina regions, with the least number of cases in the Plzeň and Karlovy Vary regions. The Zlín region experienced the most dramatic increase, with cases more than doubling in a week. Despite the widespread availability of vaccines, the country has witnessed four deaths among unvaccinated infants since 2004, highlighting the critical importance of vaccination in preventing severe outcomes.
