Špindlerův Mlýn Ski Resort Opens Slopes Early for the Season

Early Season Start

Špindlerův Mlýn, one of the most visited ski resorts in the Czech Republic, has announced an early start to the ski season. Thanks to low temperatures and excellent snow conditions, the resort is opening its slopes a week earlier than initially planned, starting from Saturday, December 2.

Preparations and Conditions

René Hroneš, the director of the Špindlerův Mlýn ski area, stated, “Due to low temperatures and very good snow conditions, we have managed to start the ski season a week earlier. Snow is falling, snow cannons and showers are running at full capacity, and the slopes already have sufficient coverage of natural and artificial snow for weekend skiing.” The resort’s lift operators will launch cable cars in the Medvědín and Horní Mísečky areas over the first five kilometers of completely snow-covered slopes. Cross-country trails are also being prepared.

Expansion and Investment

The operator of the Špindlerův Mlýn Ski Resort, Melida, a Czech branch of the Tatry Mountain Resorts owned by billionaire Igor Rataj, has invested 300 million Czech crowns in the resort this year. This investment, the largest among mountain resorts in the Republic, has been used to construct two new ski slopes, expand some existing ones, and install the most modern snowmaking system. One of the new trails was created by expanding the waterworks path on Medvědín. These improvements increase throughput and safety on often overcrowded slopes during peak times. “Major changes have been made to the busiest blue slope in Svatý Petr. Thanks to terrain adjustments in narrower parts and complex turns, the slope is significantly wider, overall more transparent, and safer,” Hroneš explained.

Other Resorts Opening

Conditions allow several ski resorts in the Czech Republic to start operations on the first weekend of December. Lifts will start on Friday, December 1, on the Janské Lázně slope Anděl on the slopes of Černá Hora. Other resorts will follow on Saturday in Krkonoše’s Horní Malá Úpa, Orlické Hory’s Říčky, Ještěd, Dolní Morava, Jeseník’s Karlov and Branná, and the Novako area in Boží Dar in the Ore Mountains.

Weather and Snowmaking

“The freezing temperatures and plenty of water after recent rains allow for intensive artificial snowmaking. The forecast promises freezing temperatures and snowfall. Dozens of centimeters of snow are expected to fall. Such a start to winter has not been seen here for a long time,” said Kateřina Neumannová, president of the Mountain Resorts Association.
