The Czech Republic’s Ministry of Defense has announced its decision to invest $120 million in the acquisition of 48 long-range, air-to-air missiles from the Israeli defense company, Rafael Systems. This procurement involves the I-Derby ER missile type, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2027. The official contract is anticipated to be finalized by the end of the month, as reported by the local news agency, ČTK, on October 25th.

This new batch of missiles will serve as an addition to the Spyder short-range air defense system, which the Czech Republic had previously purchased from Rafael in 2021. The prior agreement included the delivery of four ground-based launchers by 2026. The latest missile deal will also encompass contributions from Czech companies, particularly in supplying missile containers, integrated logistical support, and information systems. Rafael has committed to investing at least $14 million within the Czech Republic as part of this deal.

This procurement aligns with the Czech Republic’s recently released defense strategy, which emphasizes territorial defense, bolstering the domestic industry, and expediting acquisitions. The announcement coincided with a visit by the Czech Republic’s Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, to Tel Aviv, where he met with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

During this meeting, Netanyahu expressed gratitude for the Czech Republic’s unwavering support for Israel, especially during challenging times. The article was penned by Elisabeth Gosselin-Malo for Defense News.
