Czechia Sees First Snowfall of 2023-24 Winter Season – Prague Morning

On the night of October 8th, the Giant Mountains in the Czech Republic experienced the first snowfall of the 2023-24 winter season. The temperatures dipped below freezing in the early hours, resulting in powdery snow above 1,100 meters. This snowy episode is expected to be temporary, with a return to warmer weather anticipated in the coming days.

The snowfall was brought about by a recent cold front that passed over the Czech Republic, leading to sub-zero temperatures in the country’s higher elevations. Compared to previous years, this year’s first snowfall arrived a bit later. Last year, the first snowfall was recorded on September 18th, while in 2021, it occurred on October 12th.

At Sněžka, the highest peak in the Giant Mountains, temperatures reached as low as minus one degree Celsius. However, weather conditions on the mountain can change rapidly. Just before 4:00 a.m., the measuring station at the summit reported a temperature of nearly eight degrees above zero.

Besides Sněžka and the Krkonoše Mountains, the Jeseníky Mountains in Czechia also experienced low enough temperatures for snowfall. Meteorologists note, however, that the snow is unlikely to accumulate on the ground.

While the Giant Mountains are enjoying their snowy makeover, the rest of the country continues its transition into autumn, with winter expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
