The Scandal Unfolds

The Brno City Court recently accepted a one million Czech koruna bail for businessman and former regional council member of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) in the Olomouc Region, Robert Knobloch. This development comes in the wake of a scandal involving illegal influencing of public contracts for transportation constructions in the Olomouc Region. Knobloch, a key figure in this case, was one of the 13 people charged.

The Bail and Its Implications

The prosecutors had proposed detention for Knobloch due to the risk of him fleeing. However, the option of posting a one million Czech koruna bail was available. “The monetary guarantee was only credited to the court’s account today. Considering the court allowed the acceptance of the monetary guarantee, a decision will be made shortly about releasing the accused from custody,” stated the court spokesperson. If no complaints are filed against this decision, Knobloch could be released by the end of the week.

Key Figures and the Extent of the Scandal

Knobloch, a 54-year-old businessman and lobbyist, has been a long-time sponsor of ODS. He owns or co-owns several companies and is a co-owner of the Trumf Shopping Center, the Devět křížů restaurant on the D1 highway, and the U Madony pension in Přerov. Among the accused is also Michal Zácha, former regional head of ODS and former deputy governor for transport. The trio of main actors, according to Deník N, is completed by Roman Láčík, a former manager of the construction conglomerate Porr, who allegedly profited from the influencing of contracts over the past two years, through an organized method of selection and acquisition of construction contracts, with the Olomouc Region as the client.

The Damage and Potential Consequences

The damage caused by the accused is extensive and relates to the volume of road contracts. The exact amount has not been disclosed by the prosecutors. The accused face several years in prison for charges such as abuse of official authority and accepting bribes. The same length of sentence could also apply to members of an organized criminal group.

This case highlights the intricate connections between business, politics, and alleged criminal activities. The acceptance of a substantial bail for Knobloch raises questions about the effectiveness of the legal system in dealing with high-profile figures accused of serious crimes.
