Dutch architectural firm MVRDV in collaboration with Netherlands Airport Consultants (NACO) have been declared the winners of a design competition for the expansion of the Vaclav Havel Airport in Prague. The proposed design encompasses a three-building extension. Two of these structures will house a security zone, a vertiport, and dedicated lounges for business and VIP travelers. The third building, positioned across the airport loop road, will feature a hotel, a conference center, and parking amenities.

A standout feature of the design is the exterior of the buildings, which will be adorned with satellite imagery of the Czech Republic, transforming the structures into symbolic “lanterns.” This imagery will not only be showcased on the exteriors but will also be reflected on the interior ceilings. Furthermore, these images can be dynamically programmed to display information about ongoing events across the country.

Winy Maas, one of the founding partners of MVRDV, emphasized the uniqueness of the design, stating that it aims to provide travelers with a sense of place and calmness, allowing them to feel connected to the Czech landscape. This is achieved through the incorporation of recognizable Czech biotope plants in the courtyards and the depiction of the country’s green landscapes on the ceiling. Esther Kromhout, the director of NACO, expressed pride in being part of such a distinctive project that merges sustainability with innovative design elements, ensuring an engaging experience for airport passengers. It’s noteworthy that NACO operates as a subsidiary of the Dutch consultancy firm, Royal Haskoning.
