Weather Alert
The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) has raised the level of danger due to an updated weather warning for snowfall in parts of the Czech Republic. This update specifically concerns the South Bohemian Region and the southwest of the Vysočina Region. For most of the other areas, a lower level of danger is still in effect.

Details of the Warning
The warning with a high degree of danger is effective from 11:00 AM on Friday until midnight from Saturday to Sunday. It covers the entire South Bohemian Region and in the Vysočina Region, it includes areas around Humpolec, Jihlava, Moravské Budějovice, Pacov, Pelhřimov, and Telč. According to the meteorologists, from Friday morning to Sunday midnight, 30 to 40 cm of new snow is expected to fall in the south of Bohemia and the southwest of Vysočina.
Previous Forecasts and Updates
The previous warning by ČHMÚ had forecasted up to 25 centimeters of snow, with isolated areas receiving up to 35 centimeters. The updated warning indicates a significant increase in expected snowfall.
The Cause of the Snowfall
The snowfall is associated with the passage of the low-pressure area Ciro, which will move from the Western Mediterranean across the Alps and the Northern Adriatic towards the northeast.
Expected Conditions in Other Regions
In the northeast of Moravia and in Silesia, continuous snowfall is expected to continue into Sunday morning and afternoon. “From early Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon, we expect the formation of snow tongues, and in the mountains, even snowdrifts. In the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, due to the fresh northwesterly wind from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon, the formation of snow tongues will be more frequent, and in places, snowdrifts will also form,” warn the meteorologists.

Impact on Traffic and Safety Measures
The snowfall is complicating traffic in many places on Friday. Firefighters, police, and rescue workers are dealing with a number of traffic accidents. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and be prepared for challenging road conditions.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings. It is also recommended to avoid unnecessary travel and to be prepared for potential disruptions caused by the heavy snowfall.
As the Czech Republic braces for a significant snowfall event, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute’s updated warning underscores the seriousness of the situation. With up to 40 cm of snow expected in some regions, the impact on daily life, travel, and safety is substantial.
Preparing for the Snowfall
Residents in the affected areas are urged to prepare for the snowfall. This includes ensuring that homes are adequately heated and insulated, and that emergency supplies such as food, water, and medical necessities are well-stocked. It’s also important to check on vulnerable neighbors, such as the elderly or those living alone, to ensure they are safe and prepared.
Travel and Safety
Travel disruptions are expected, and residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel. Those who must travel should ensure their vehicles are equipped for winter conditions, including snow tires and emergency kits. Public transport users should anticipate delays and cancellations and plan their journeys accordingly.
Emergency Services and Response
Emergency services are on high alert to respond to incidents arising from the severe weather. The public is advised to follow any instructions or advisories issued by local authorities and emergency services. This includes adhering to road closures, evacuation orders, or other safety directives.
Impact on Public Services
The heavy snowfall is likely to impact public services, including schools, healthcare facilities, and government offices. Residents should stay informed about closures or service disruptions through local news sources and official communications.
