The Czech Republic is bracing for a significant weather event as meteorologists warn of the impending storm Linus, set to bring a mix of heavy snowfall, rain, and potentially hazardous icy conditions this Sunday. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) has issued a preliminary warning, signaling a challenging weekend ahead for nearly the entire country.

As early as Friday, signs of storm Linus will be felt, with the weather system moving in from the west. The ČHMÚ forecasts a transition from snow to rain, especially in higher altitudes, raising concerns about the formation of ice. This weather event is expected to affect a wide range of regions, including Prague, and the Středočeský, Jihočeský, Ústecký, Liberecký, Královéhradecký, Pardubický, Jihomoravský, Olomoucký, Zlínský, Moravskoslezský, and Vysočina regions.
The forecast for November 19, 2023, suggests that snowflakes will begin to fall by Sunday night, continuing throughout the day. Meteorologist Dagmar Honsová cautions that the snow cover could lead to significant disruptions on the roads. Drivers are advised to exercise increased caution, allowing extra travel time, ensuring the use of winter tires, and keeping essential items like a shovel and snow chains in their vehicles. Additionally, having enough fuel, a charged battery, a functional radiator, and antifreeze for windshield washers is crucial for safe travel.
The impact of the wind will also be a factor to consider, with fresh northwest winds and gusts of about 55 kilometers per hour expected, particularly on the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The storm’s effects are anticipated to be most pronounced on roadways.
The ČHMÚ has released detailed maps illustrating the expected types of precipitation throughout the day. These maps indicate areas where rain (green), freezing precipitation (yellow), snow (blue), and rain mixed with snow (purple) are likely to occur. The maps are time-stamped from midnight to 3 PM, with a gradual warming from the west expected to reduce precipitation as the day progresses.
This weather event, marked by the arrival of storm Linus, poses significant challenges for the Czech Republic. Residents and travelers are urged to stay informed, prepare adequately, and exercise caution to navigate safely through this potentially disruptive winter storm.
