Severe Storms and Winds Wreak Havoc in Czechia

Parts of Czechia, including the Central Bohemian, Hradec Králové, and Pardubice regions, experienced significant disruptions due to intense storms and powerful winds that persisted from Tuesday evening to early Wednesday. Firefighters were kept on their toes, attending to numerous emergencies, primarily involving fallen trees. These trees not only blocked roads but also damaged houses, cars, and even disrupted railway traffic.

In Central Bohemia, particularly in areas like Běleč in Berounsk, a train incident occurred when it collided with a fallen tree. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The Benešovska, Mladoboleslavska, Prague-west, and Prague-east districts reported the highest number of storm-related incidents.

Railway operations faced challenges as trees fell on traction lines between Libčice and Kralupy nad Vltavou. This led to a temporary suspension of services for a couple of hours, with replacement buses being arranged between Prague and Kralupy.

The Ústí nad Labem Region saw firefighters attending to around fifty incidents, mostly clearing roads. In the Hradec Králové Region, 107 incidents were recorded, with many involving fallen trees on parked cars. The strong winds also damaged several house roofs.

Energy workers in the Jičín and Hradec regions addressed faults on high-voltage lines due to falling branches and trees. By 7 a.m., most households in eastern Bohemia that faced power outages had their electricity restored.

In the Pilsen region, over sixty events were reported, with firefighters primarily clearing roads. Two train incidents were reported near Srby in southern Pilsen and Hrádek near Sušice in Klatovsk, where trains collided with fallen trees. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either case.

The Vysočina region also faced disruptions in train services due to fallen trees, especially between Havlíčkový Brod and Šlapanov and between Rantířov and Kostelec u Jihlava. Again, no injuries were reported, and substitute bus services were arranged.

The recent weather conditions highlight the crucial role of emergency responders and utility workers in ensuring safety and restoring normalcy. Efforts are now underway in the affected regions to recover and repair the damages.
