The festive season in Prague has officially begun with the ceremonial lighting of the first Christmas tree of the year at Wenceslas Square. This event marks the start of the “Wenceslas Christmas,” a period filled with holiday spirit, delicious food, drinks, and a special focus on charity. The event, organized by the New Town of Prague Association, supports various non-profit organizations through the “Support Goodness” project.

The Festive Atmosphere
Wenceslas Square is now fully prepared for the advent season. Traditional stalls offering artisanal gifts, a rich program of musical performances, the aroma of mulled wine, hot apple cider, and exquisite food set the scene. The highlight is the Christmas tree, which was lit amidst a crowd of onlookers by the Mayor of Prague 1, Terezie Radoměřská, and Deputy Mayor David Bodeček. In a gesture of community and celebration, they also traditionally cut and distributed Christmas gingerbread to all who came for the treat. The peaceful advent mood was further enhanced by musical performances from the Podřipský Brass Quintet and The Brownies band.

Words from the Organizers
The evening began with Monika Vlková, representing the New Town of Prague Association, welcoming all attendees. Mayor Terezie Radoměřská expressed her gratitude to the Association for organizing this beautiful traditional event that supports many charitable organizations. She wished everyone a pleasant advent time, a period for reflection on the beautiful aspects of life, brightened by candles or enjoyable events like the one at Wenceslas Square. Deputy Mayor David Bodeček also thanked the Association for the wonderful event and wished everyone a beautiful advent and all the best for the year 2024. He highlighted the children’s performances included in the Wenceslas Christmas program, which will continue until January 7, 2024.
The lighting of the Christmas tree at Wenceslas Square is more than just a festive event; it is a symbol of community, charity, and the joyous spirit of the holiday season. The “Wenceslas Christmas” brings together people from all walks of life to celebrate, reflect, and contribute to a good cause, making it a cherished tradition in Prague’s cultural calendar.
