Europe Should Bolster Its Defense Independence, Says Czech President
Czech President Petr Pavel, during his speech at the College of Europe in Bruges, emphasized that Europe should lessen its defense dependence on the U.S. and fortify the European segment of NATO. He stated, “The dominant role of NATO as a security provider must no longer mean that Europe neglects its defense obligations.” Pavel further suggested that Europe’s contribution to the transatlantic partnership should involve reducing its reliance on the U.S. and fostering European strategic capabilities.
Pavel also touched upon the defense spending target set by NATO allies during the Vilnius summit in July. While the goal was set at 2% of GDP, Pavel believes that in many cases, spending might need to exceed this benchmark. Currently, only about one-third of the 31-member alliance is either meeting or nearing this target.
The Czech President also voiced his support for NATO enlargement and stressed the importance of countering Russia’s narrative in Africa. Having previously served as a senior NATO leader, Pavel assumed the Czech presidency in early 2023.
In related news, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg engaged in discussions with leaders of the G7 group, including U.S. President Joe Biden. The conversation revolved around concerns arising from the U.S. Congress’ decision to halt aid funding for Ukraine. Stoltenberg highlighted the significance of sustained support for Ukraine to achieve lasting peace.
